Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide education, information, and organization to those interested in wood turning. We meet on a monthly basis to share wood turning challenges, insights and accomplishments. Our chapter accomplishes this through our mentoring program, libraries, mini symposiums, monthly newsletters and friendship.

Chapter History

In January, 1988, 27 people got together, turned some wood on a lathe, tried out new tools, made wood chips and met new people. In September, 1988 the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) made the Michigan Association of Woodturners an associate chapter,with Nancy Lynn Sharpless as the first President. Nancy by the way is the daughter of one of the great legends in woodturning, Palmer Sharpless.

Over the years the chapter has grown at such a fast pace that other chapters were formed as spin offs to meet the great distances members were having to travel. The Detroit Area Woodturners was the first to form. The Blue Water Chapter was formed next off of the Detroit chapter. The Michigan/Ohio Woodturners and the Huron Valley Turners became the third and fourth chapters to be formed as spinoffs. This interest in southern Michigan has created a great interest in a great hobby.

All chapters are spreading the art and fellowship of woodturning today. The original chapter of the Michigan Association of Woodturners is currently meeting in Holly, Michigan and welcomes all who wish to learn more about woodturning and to meet some great people who are of like mind.
